Psychologist or Crime Novelists: Who Better Understands the Human Mind?

    Psychologist Professor Richard Wiseman in conversation with Scottish Writer Ian Rankin.

An evening organised by the British Psychological Society Scottish Branch, the professional organisation for psychology and psychologists at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Professor Richard Wiseman researches the psychology of luck, self-help, persuasion, and illusion. A passionate advocate for science, his best-selling books have been translated into over 30 languages and he has presented keynote addresses at Microsoft, Caltech, and Google.

Richard is the most followed psychologist on Twitter, created videos that received over 18 million views, and was named as one of the top 100 people who make Britain a better place to live. Over two million people have particiapted in his mass experiments and he has acted as a creative consultant to Derren Brown, The MythBusters, CBS’s The Mentalist, and Heston Blumenthal.

Ian Rankin’s first Rebus novel was published in 1987. The Rebus books are now translated into twenty-two languages and are bestsellers on several continents. In all Ian Rankin has written 33 titles, including a book of short stories, plus presented the TV series, 'Ian Rankin's Evil Thoughts'.

Ian Rankin was elected a Hawthornden Fellow, and was a winner of Chandler-Fulbright Award. He received 4 Crime Writers' Association Dagger Awards, including the Diamond Dagger in 2005.

Psychology is the scientific study of people, the mind and behaviour. The British Psychological Society (BPS) is the representative body for psychology and psychologists in the UK. The BPS is responsible for the development, promotion and application of psychology for the public good.
